NORTH SOUTH GAS PIPELINE PROJECT – NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION

In order to meet the natural gas demand of the country, the Government of Pakistan has signed an agreement for the construction of a gas pipeline, called the North-South Gas Pipeline (NSGP) Project. It is an 800 km long pipeline, passing through the provinces of Sindh and Punjab, taking an east-ward route. The starting point of the proposed pipeline is near Nawabshah in Sindh and will terminate at Nankana Sahib, near Lahore, in Punjab.

Inter State Gas System (ISGS) has undertaken this project, which is currently in its planning phase. EMC Pakistan Pvt. Ltd. has been contracted by Siegl Preskey Smith Financing Limited (SPS UK) for undertaking Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Study for the NSGP Project following Local Regulations and International Standards.

The environmental assessment (examination and evaluation) will be based on comparative evaluation approach. Initially the baseline or the profile of the project area will be developed by site surveys, collecting data, records and information on physical, ecological / biologicalas well as socioeconomic environment. The data so compiled will then be projected or modeled for different phases of projects, i.e. design, construction, & operations. The likely changes in the critical environmental aspects or significant changes in the environmental parameters will be identified. The consultant shall carry out detailed assessment of all potential environmental and social impacts associated with the various project activities related to construction of proposed road. The assessment of environmental and social impacts will be followed by suggestions of suitable mitigation measures for identified adverse environmental and social impacts.
