Preparation of Water Master Plan for Thar Coalfield including Hydro-geological Water Supply and Waste Water Management Studies.

Thar Coal Field is located in Thar Desert area occupying East and South-Eastern portion of Sindh Province of Pakistan. Being a desert, the area is an extremely dry and arid region with very low rain fall and limited water resources. The supply of water for the development of coal mines, power plants and related domestic complex is vital for successful future operation of the facilities. The Government of Sindh embarked upon a detailed study for preparing Water Master Plan for Thar Coal field through a Consultant Consortium led by EMC Pakistan Private Ltd. and comprising of WSP UK, Digby Wells Environmental and Deep Rock Drilling Pvt. Ltd (DRD). The preparation of the Water Master Plan includes studies of the project area’s Hydrogeology, Water Supply and Wastewater Management.

The main objective of the Consultant Consortium led by EMC, has been to support Sindh Energy Department, Sindh Coal Authority (SCA), Government of Sindh, and Government of Pakistan (GOP) by successfully performing the following core activities:

  • Hydro-geological investigation of the area and assessment of groundwater resources and quality of groundwater;
  • Hydrological studies of the Thar coal mine area, and assessment of water demand during various phases of development of mines and power plants in future;
  • Estimate of drainage effluent and wastewater that is likely to be generated from the mines, and the proposed options for treatment to use it for human consumption or alternatively options for proper disposal of this effluent;
  • Assessment of best source/option for meeting Thar Coal mine area water demand in short, medium and long term given the available surface and groundwater resources and their location
  • Feasibility level designs for effective option for water supply and wastewater disposal system.

The various activities performed within the Thar Coalfield Water Master Plan scope of work, have been summarized below: –

  • Groundwater assessment of the Thar Coalfield area.
  • Estimate of amount of mine drainage water (via preparation of a Regional Ground Water Model).
  • Definition of water requirements and Estimation of Water Demand by Coal Block and Inhabitants.
  • Design of water / drainage water / storm water / waste water network (Feasibility level).
  • Design of waste water treatment facilities (Feasibility level).
  • Design of waste water / saline water disposal scheme (Feasibility level).
  • Environmental assessment of Water Management Schemes.
  • Social assessment of Water Management Schemes.
  • Water Regulatory Framework.
  • Project Cost Estimates, Benefits and Economic Analysis.
